Leonard Clarence Lord was born in Surry, Maine, on June 6, 1893. He served in the United States Army during World War I, and later lived in Michigan and in Middletown, Connecticut. During World War II, he served in England, France, and Germany with two regiments of the European Civil Affairs Division; immediately after the war, he worked with displaced persons in Germany.
